What a GSM number tells you

A 100 GSM paper has a mass of 100 grams per square metre. A higher number means more paper mass for the same area. Grammage is measured using a defined method, such as ISO 536.

Thickness is a separate property. Papers with the same GSM can differ in thickness, stiffness and strength because their fibres, density and manufacture differ. Comparing bags only by GSM can therefore miss differences that matter in use.

Start with the contents and construction

What to discuss for each type of order

Retail carry bag	Filled weight, dimensions, handle attachment and how the bag sits when carried.
Grocery or takeaway	Base size, packed contents, moisture exposure and whether food touches the paper.
Fashion or boutique	Product fit, stiffness, appearance, print result and handle comfort.
Gift presentation	Board construction, finish, reinforcement and the shape of the packed gift.

Why higher GSM is not a load rating

A bag's performance also depends on its dimensions, paper grade, folds, glued seams, base and handles. A heavier paper does not compensate for an unsuitable handle or construction. Humidity, moisture and how the contents are placed can also change performance.

Ask for a sample and assess it with the actual products, including their corners and weight distribution. Confirm any load or performance requirement as part of the order specification rather than assuming a GSM number establishes it.

Compare the whole specification and cost

To compare two quotations, keep the bag dimensions, paper grade, handles, printing, finish and quantity consistent. Changing the paper weight can affect material use and cost, but the final price also depends on those other choices.

GSM does not establish food or recycling suitability

Tell us when food will touch the bag directly. Food-contact suitability needs to be assessed for the relevant materials and intended use. Similarly, recycling depends on the complete construction, coatings, handles, condition and the collection system at the destination.
